New Volunteers

February was another good month for the program as 13 new talents were welcomed into the District 4 GAL family.  In Duplin/Sampson Counties, Jeanette Britt, Terry Faison, Jean Hart, Pamela High, Juliette Murray, Velma Leavens and Ann Lyles joined our fold, bringing them to 39 volunteers, a new high, at least in recent memory!  In Onslow County Stephanie Alvarez, Donna Flaherty, Wilma Grafton, Jennifer McElwrath, Willie McQueen and Katina Poteat were sworn in.  All 13 are diligently working cases.  Welcome!

We welcome former GAL, Wilma, back after a hiatus of several years.  And thanks to Anna Marrible and Michael Schmidt for encouraging Willie and Donna to join us in the child advocacy effort.

President’s Volunteer Service Award Program

America has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service.  Now more than ever, volunteers are renewing their commitment to helping others and making new connections that bring us closer together as families, as neighbors, as communities, and as a Nation.

The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President's Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.  If you would like to participate in this award program, begin tracking your volunteer hours now.  To qualify, the volunteer must keep track of their volunteer service hours and accumulate a minimum of 100 hours.  Once you have completed the 100 hours of volunteer service, the hours must be certified by a certifying agency.  The Fourth Judicial District has been approved as a certifying agency.  As a certifying agency, we are responsible for certifying the hours of volunteer service, nominating qualified volunteers, ordering and paying for Awards (either directly or through financial sponsorship), and distributing the Awards locally.

The award packet includes:

·         Personalized Certificate

·         Letter from the President of the United States

·         Letter from the President's Council on Service & Civic Participation

·         Lapel Pin

If you wish to participate, please use the Volunteer Hours form available in the GAL office or this form can be emailed to you, it is also available on the website under the Volunteer Resource page.  If you have kept good records that can be verified, the hours can be back dated no more than six months so back to December 2006.  This volunteer time does not include the initial GAL training classes, but does include any direct service provided on your case which includes meetings, visits, travel time, research, reading/writing reports, and time spent in court.  Please contact the office to let us know that you are interested in participating.
