Internet Safety: Crimes against Children

As if it were not difficult enough to raise children these days, internet innovations such as MySpace, Youtube, and innumerable “chat room” locations continue to challenge parents’ vigilance.  North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper says, “Computers and the Internet have revolutionized the way we communicate, work, shop and learn.  But along with the positive changes come new responsibilities and potential dangers.  Hazards that begin with innocent computer use can threaten your family’s safety and well being.”

According to information published by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, 1 in 5 youths between the ages of 10 and 17 has received unwanted sexual solicitations online; 1 in 4 youths has been exposed to unsolicited sexually explicit pictures on line.

To help in the battle against this “cyberfilth,”, the Jacksonville office of the Guardian ad Litem Program, in cooperation with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, hosted an Internet Safety Workshop on February 9, 2007, in the auditorium of Coastal Carolina Community College on Western Boulevard in Jacksonville, NC.  Hans Miller, a Special Agent with the NC State Bureau of Investigation conducted the training.  The following publications are handouts provided during this training.  This information is not copy writed and we hope you will pass this information on to other parents and community child advocates.
